Nordic Semiconductor’s new IoT module certified for use on Verizon networks

Via Verizon Wireless Newsroom

Oct 29, 2019

BASKING RIDGE – Verizon has certified a new wireless IoT chipset and module developed by Nordic Semiconductor. The nRF9160TM System-in-Package (SiP) for multimode LTE-M1/Narrowband-IoT, with assisted GPS, is one of the smallest, lowest power, most-integrated solutions available on the market today. The certification grants developers access to the Verizon network, affording them true single-device application design options.

The nRF9160 brings ease-of-use and further simplifies the complexities of wireless IoT product design by integrating its own low-power chip with a dedicated ARM© Cortex©-M33 application processor with 1 MB Flash, 256 MB RAM and a multimode LTE-M/NB-IoT/GPS modem. The compact 10x16x1mm System-in-Package has been certified for operation on both Verizon LTE-M1 bands, ensuring maximum channel availability and coverage, and its multimode/multi-band operation between LTE-M1 and NB-IoT, making it suitable for global wireless IoT device applications.

“This certification of Nordic Semiconductor’s wireless IoT solution on our network is a demonstration of how developing a great partnership can pay dividends for our customers,” said Steve Szabo, Head of Global Products & Solutions for Verizon’s IoT business.

Carrier certification simplifies application development and enhances device confidence. Using a Verizon certified module can drastically reduce time-to-market for solution developers, making Nordic Semiconductor a “one-stop-shop” for wireless IoT applications and connectivity.

“Certification by Verizon is a major milestone for us and will provide a major boost to commercial confidence in the nRF9160, which has already proven to be incredibly popular with our customer base because of both its range of features and ease-of-use,” says Svein-Egil Nielsen, CTO, with Nordic Semiconductor, the largest Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) chip vendor in the world.

As part of this launch, Nordic Semiconductor will be available to OEMs on Verizon’s ThingSpace Ready, an accelerator program designed to help get wireless IoT solutions to market quickly, reliably, and cost effectively.
