Because the global telecoms industry as a whole is unfamiliar with Open Source, some players have been wary of committing to the concept in the erroneous belief that the 'open' nature of the development process means that Open Source projects are inherently unstable, uncontrollable and perform badly. In fact, as Prodip Sen and John Healy argue, nothing could be further from the truth. They point out that the collaborative nature of OPNFV is the essence and guarantor of innovation and is an umbrella organisation that permits technologists to posit diverse perspectives and take development paths to a unified goal. Open Source, by its very nature, personifies innovation because it attracts a diverse community of developers who have original and different ideas as to how to solve any given problem. Most Open Source decision are technical decisions made by the technical community with the OPNFV Board acting as a guide but standing back from the technical process itself.

Featuring:

  • John Healy, General Manager, SDN Division, Intel Corporation
