The networking aspect of NFV can be simple when telcos are virtualising their network functions, as all the complexity is built in to the new VNFs. But every single VNF needs to be first qualified and tested in every different environments which is a lengthy and time-consuming process. An intelligent, programmable SDN enables telcos to move all that individual complexity into the network itself, consolidating the functions that are common to all installed VNFs. They can then save money through optimisation, as well as make money by accelerating time to market for their new services. However, an infrastructure doesn't deliver anything without the applications, which is why ecosystems and an holistic approach is essential for the industry.
