Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and its longstanding partner Swisscom have introduced the next-generation Energy & Enclosure platform – part of the Ericsson Radio System portfolio – in Swisscom’s network. This marks a major step forward in intelligent, automated, and energy-efficient radio access network (RAN) infrastructure. The milestone is the result of a close two-year collaboration, with Swisscom contributing operational expertise, strict performance requirements, and extensive field validation.
The successful development builds on nearly a decade of partnership focused on innovation and operational excellence. It reflects a shared ambition to unlock smarter, more sustainable network capabilities in Switzerland while setting new global benchmarks for telecom site operations. The platform is a key enabler for Swisscom as it evolves its network towards new operational models, supporting dynamic adoption of new technologies and proactive risk mitigation.
The new, future-proof Energy & Enclosure platform is a fully integrated site-energy solution that combines high-efficiency power systems, intelligent energy storage, advanced enclosures, and the Controller 6610 to deliver more resilient, secure, and sustainable networks. It gives communications service providers like Swisscom granular, software-driven control of site energy through features such as load management, load shifting, peak shaving, and hybrid solar operation—cutting energy and operational costs, while reducing carbon emissions.
A key AI feature is intelligent battery management during grid outages. The system assesses battery status, predicts consumption, and optimizes power use to prioritize critical network functions—safeguarding service continuity until power is restored. Through actionable insights, smart energy management, and predictive analytics, the platform helps operators boost energy efficiency and achieve significant cost savings. These capabilities also enable predictive maintenance and remote energy management, reducing the need for manual intervention and enhancing network resilience.
The platform offers new Ericsson products for both indoor and outdoor site types, focusing on performance, scalability, security, and energy efficiency.
- Power 6280: A high-capacity, intelligent power unit supporting over 32 kW DC for future-proof site operations.
- Power D620: A fully digitized DC distribution system with e-fuses that provide granular energy data and optimizes battery capacity with load control.
- Ultra-efficient rectifier: Thanks to its innovative design, the rectifier achieves a conversion efficiency of 97.6 percent from AC to DC power. This minimizes energy losses and delivers an outstanding total cost of ownership.
- Enclosure 6235: A versatile indoor enclosure that can be delivered as a flat pack for sites with challenging access or pre-integrated for rapid deployment.
- Controller 6610: A new software platform that integrates all site power elements into centralized network management with smart diagnostics, enabling network operators to leverage industry-leading automation for real-time awareness and control of all radio access network site assets.
Philipp Bichsel, Swisscom, says: “Our long-standing collaboration with Ericsson is grounded in a shared focus on innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence. Through close cooperation over the past two years, we have jointly developed an intelligent energy and enclosure platform that supports Swisscom’s ambition to operate highly efficient, resilient, and environmentally responsible mobile networks. This solution enables us to further reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint while ensuring reliable connectivity for our customers.”
Mårten Lerner, Head of Networks Strategy and Product Management at Ericsson, says:
“By combining Ericsson’s technology leadership with Swisscom’s operational experience, we have developed our new Energy & Enclosure Platform, including a fully digital power system designed for smart energy management. The platform provides security paired with RAN and site data collection in real time for efficient remote operation and control. With load steering and lithium energy storage, we prolong uptime during power outage. This close collaboration has resulted in a solution that enables more efficient and resilient telecom sites, empowering customers with smarter, greener, and more robust networks in Switzerland and beyond.”
