AI boosts Telenet’s 5G network performance

  • Telenet and Ericsson deliver market-leading 5G availability and experience according to the latest independent report from Open Signal, securing the best customer experience during Belgium’s festival season
  • New Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) capabilities for proactive optimization of the network, provided by Ericsson Cognitive software and Ericsson Operation Engine, have successfully reduced overall incidents by 16 percent
  • Telenet's 5G network will also be more efficient thanks to additional RAN energy savings

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and Belgian Communications Service Provider, Telenet, have deployed the leading 5G network in Belgium in terms of availability and experience, according to this year’s Open Signal independent report. Telenet’s 5G network is the best performer among Belgian operators in terms of availability and shows top-in-class results for 5G experience related to gaming, video and voice apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Skype.

A key proof point of 5G efficiency and performance for Belgian consumers is the deployment during summer festivals. Telenet and Ericsson jointly deployed additional high-speed 5G sites (including 3.5GHz TDD mid-band radios) on more than 120 locations, offering a 20 percent network performance boost from normal coverage. In 2023, Telenet and Ericsson were present at more than 70 events, including major festivals such as Tomorrowland and Rock Werchter. The largest of these festivals saw up to 80 terabytes of traffic being utilized, which corresponds to 20,000,000 photos or 40,000 hours of HD video.

The partnership between Telenet and Ericsson, which was prolonged for an additional five years in 2021, is based on technology leadership with the integration of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to improve mobile network operations and performance. In this context, Ericsson and Telenet have collaboratively deployed Ericsson Operations Engine, resulting in a robust network operations system. Additionally, the Ericsson Cognitive software was also deployed providing new AI/ML capabilities for proactive optimization of the network.  All in all, this deployment achieved an impressive 99.91 percent network availability benefiting from the implementation of more than 110 automation rules, resulting in an overall incident reduction of 16 percent.

The integration of cutting-edge innovations will also enhance the energy efficiency of the Telenet 5G network. AI implementation will result in additional energy savings.

Luk Bruynseels, CTO of Telenet, says: “We are pleased that the fruitful partnership between Telenet and Ericsson is resulting in a leading 5G network in Belgium and offering our customers a state-of-the-art mobile experience. We are proud of the 5G network coverage we have reached so far and expect a 5G coverage of more than 65% of the Belgian population by end of this year. We will continue to leverage Ericsson’s technological leadership and Telenet’s expertise to improve our 5G networks and allow more Belgian users to tap its potential.”

Fabrice Sancho, head of Ericsson BeLux says: “The leading performance of Telenet's 5G mobile network underscores the efficiency of the successful partnership between Ericsson and Telenet both in products and services for the benefit of Belgian consumers and enterprises.”
