The major metric of the success of NFV will be when services providers introduce services and start making a return on their heavy investments in the technology. That time is getting ever closer as residual vendor resistance to the concept of 'openness' withers on the vine, standards emerge and "carrier grade" levels of NFV performance, reliability and security are guaranteed and user cases that are comparatively easy to introduce (such as virtual CPE) become increasingly commonplace.
