Alex Quatch explains that 5G network deployment began in 2018, that those deployments are accelerating during 2019 and will continue to do so regionally and globally for several years to come. The first phase of 5G network rollout involves what is called "non-standard implementation" whereby new radio access networks are connected to the current 4G network core. Meanwhile, the core 5G network will be deployed from 2020 onwards to complement the 5G RAN that is being installed now.

He emphasises that the 5G core network will be very different to that of 4G in that it is a services-based architecture that permits CSPs easily to slice networks and so provide a service "to deliver on the promise of 5G". In essence, this means it can offer different network services with the same network as opposed to sharing different networks to offer different services, thus allowing CSPs to roll out a myriad of services and make use of different network resources (such as AI, compute and storage) when and where services need them.
