Dan Kohn, Executive Director, Cloud Native Computing Foundation

In just four years, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) has amassed almost 500 member companies, including all the major public clouds, enterprise software companies and over 100 end users. It took Kubernetes into open source and made it the de facto container orchestrator and the default way of running most workloads in the cloud.

It sees Cloud Native as comprising three distinct elements: containerization, microservices and centralised orchestration. This enables collaboration not the lower layers and competition on the services and applications layers on top – a model that telcos are now realising could also work for them. The telecoms industry has lagged behind the cloud sector in terms of pushing networking evolution, but the CNCF is looking to see how telcos can leverage Kubernetes and Cloud Native technologies. AT&T has been a member since day one and has since been joined by other large telecoms groups that include Vodafone and Verizon. The message to other telcos is clear: if you are serious about Cloud Native, then now is the time to get involved and join the ecosystem.
