Lightera opens optical cable plant in Mexicali to meet growing demand from telecom, DC sectors

Lightera, a leading company in optical fiber and connectivity solutions, announces the opening of a new production plant in Mexicali, Mexico, strengthening its optical cable manufacturing capacity and reinforcing its role as a strategic supplier for the telecommunications and data center sectors in Mexico and North America.

This inauguration marks the second phase of development for Lightera’s Mexico facility and responds to the accelerated growth of the digital market—driven by the company’s expansion into Latin America, the increasing demand for data center infrastructure, and the technological transformation underway among telecommunications operators and internet service providers (ISPs).

The first phase of the plant—launched in 2017—focused on cable connectorization. With this new expansion, Lightera strengthens its industrial presence with a production line dedicated to optical cable manufacturing, reinforcing its leadership in connectivity solutions for the new digital era.

Today, the plant employs approximately 400 people and features advanced manufacturing technology capable of producing multi-tube cables with up to 288 optical fiber strands, integrated into the end-to-end solutions developed by Lightera across its various manufacturing units. As a result, Lightera is better positioned to meet the fast-growing demand of telecom operators, internet service providers and data center markets— fueled by surging data traffic and ongoing digitalization.

“The new production line in Mexicali is a clear demonstration of Lightera’s commitment to innovation and to Mexico’s technological development. We are increasing our manufacturing capacity to deliver next-generation optical solutions that meet international standards, strengthening the country as a strategic connectivity hub in the region,” said Helio Durigan, Senior Vice President at Lightera.

Local Capability, Global Quality

The expansion includes new infrastructure to conduct mechanical and optical tests within the plant, ensuring compliance with the highest quality and reliability standards. In addition, by operating locally, the Mexicali plant meets national requirements and certifications, offering significant logistical advantages by reducing delivery times and import costs.

The products manufactured in Mexicali are also ready for export, as they meet international standards and certifications that allow them to meet demand in other markets across Latin America and North America.

“This expansion strengthens our competitiveness to serve both local and international markets and reinforces our commitment to job creation, technology transfer, and Mexico’s industrial development,” added Helio Durigan.

Made in Mexico, Powered by Advanced Technology

The Mexicali plant has recently received the “Hecho en México” (Made in Mexico) seal. The certification was granted by Mexico’s Ministry of Economy on November 27 in Mexico City. This official recognition reinforces Lightera’s position as a company that promotes national talent, engineering excellence, and domestic manufacturing capability.
