Late last year at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America, a team of more than 80 volunteers from 15 companies and organisations together with six open source communities and standards groups unveiled their E2E 5G Cloud Native Network live demonstration. The demo took a cloud native approach to building a 5G network prototype on open source infrastructure and components including kubernetes.

Live, on stage in San Diego, California, before a global audience, a 5G call was placed across private and public clouds connecting to a packet core in Montreal, Canada, an IMS core in the public cloud and an LTE laboratory in France. It worked perfectly, but getting the demo to the point of proof of concept was a four-month-long process and a complex logistical challenge. It achieved fruition because of the power of partnership between the many and various contributors including the Open Source community and private equipment manufacturers working together to develop a unique, world's first prototype working 5G Cloud Native network.

As you can see it was a major achievement. To quote Heather Kirksey, VP Community and Ecosystems at the Linux Foundation, who introduced the demo, "It worked because the power of many people is far greater than the power of one. Bringing together people from 15 different organisations across three continents, multiple countries, multiple companies and the technologies from multiple Open Source organisations to build a prototype that is fully cloud native and actually to demonstrate it is something that can't be done in a silo or by one company or organisation alone."

As she says, "That's the power of Open Source; dreaming big, building amazing stuff and doing it all together." She's absolutely right. take a look.
