Ericsson strikes Cloud RAN agreement with AMD
Apr 27, 2023
- Technical partnership shows Ericsson’s continued commitment to delivering flexibility for service providers and embracing the larger Open RAN and Cloud RAN ecosystem
- Ericsson and AMD will jointly explore processing technologies in Cloud RAN with the goal of enhancing performance and securing high-capacity solutions
Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) is boosting its Open RAN and Cloud RAN ecosystem commitment through an agreement with US-based global ICT industry leader AMD. The agreement – intended to strengthen the Open RAN ecosystem and vendor-agnostic Cloud RAN environment – aims to offer communications service providers (CSPs) a combination of high performance and additional flexibility for open architecture offerings.
The Ericsson-AMD collaboration will see additional processing technologies in the Ericsson Cloud RAN offering. The expanded offering aims to enhance the performance of Cloud RAN and secure high-capacity solutions. The collaboration will enable joint exploration of AMD EPYC processors and T2 Telco accelerator for utilisation in Cloud RAN solutions, while also investigating future platform generations of these technologies.
Expanding the ecosystem with new partners and technologies is one of the key drivers in Open RAN and Cloud RAN architectures.
Freddie Södergren, Head of Technology and Strategy for Networks, Ericsson, says: “Our work with AMD is a great example of our efforts to expand our support and add more choices for our customers looking to advance their Cloud RAN and Open RAN journey. Adding this technical partner furthers our commitment to enable Ericsson Cloud RAN to run on multiple platforms, delivering a truly cloud-agnostic platform that provides the highest performance required for delivering 5G connectivity and beyond.”
Kumaran Siva, Corporate Vice President, Strategic Business Development, AMD, says: “We are excited to accelerate our continued expansion in the telco space, delivering advanced and highly performant solutions for the open RAN ecosystem. Our collaboration with Ericsson delivers on our joint customers’ demands for increased choice of processing and accelerator technologies as well as helping to enhance the performance, efficiency, and security of Ericsson Cloud RAN solutions.”
Ericsson’s highly portable Cloud RAN application is truly independent of the underlying processing technologies and server, bringing added flexibility and lowering the barriers to entry. This ensures that Cloud RAN is available to any provider that wishes to deploy it. This agreement lays the foundations for CSPs to have the broadest possible choice of hardware, while offering a high level of performance and resilience.
