Think it’s too soon to be using OpenStack for 5G? Think again. AT&T is already using it for the new 5G core. During the keynote session at the OpenStack Summit in Berlin, AT&T conducted a live demo that linked to its Lab in Washington State to demonstrate the speed and resilience of its new architecture, using test frequencies to show a 5G NR video call via Skype running over the new core. This work is all being delivered and driven by software, over AT&T’s Network Cloud, which has already been rolled out to 20 cities across the US. The CSP is using Airship to deploy and manage the OpenStack implementation on the Network Cloud. It is also using a term called “VNF Teaming” to speed up the delivery of multiple VNFs at scale across the network.
