Balazs Bertenyi and Erik Guttman, 3GPP
Late December 2017 marked an historical achievement in the cellular standards group, 3GPP. It released the long-awaited non-standalone (NSA) 5G radio specifications. This first drop of Release 15 means that a mobile operator can use an LTE anchor with a 5G NR cell, performing control plane communications through LTE and using 5G NR to boost user data capacity. The chairmen of the 3GPP radio access network (RAN) group and the service and systems aspects (SA) group explain what the release means for the industry, and what is still to come before a full 5G specification is complete.
Featuring:
- Balazs Bertenyi, 3GPP RAN Chairman
- Erik Guttman, 3GPP SA Chairman
Filmed at: 3GPP Plenary, Lisbon, December 2017
