Companies Publicly Showcase Multi-Vendor LTE-V2X Chipset Interoperability with Leading Automakers on Roadways at SAE China Congress Exhibition Event in Shanghai

Nov 5, 2018 | SHANGHAI

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), and the Datang Telecom Group, a subsidiary of China Information and Communication Technologies Group Corp (CICT), today announced the companies’ continued joint efforts to accelerate commercial deployment for LTE-V2X (also known as C-V2X across the globe) direct communication technology and applications based on 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 14 specifications, aiming to showcase the technology’s readiness and accelerate its commercial deployment in China. Following initial lab testing earlier this year, Qualcomm Technologies and Datang today took a step further to publicly demonstrate LTE-V2X interoperability in the field as a part of a larger LTE-V2X demonstration across leading automakers and software stack providers. These demonstrations take place at the SAE China Congress Exhibition (SAECCE) event held this week in Shanghai to showcase Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) use cases. In August, Qualcomm Technologies and Datang announced they had successfully completed the world’s first chipset interoperability test utilizing the Qualcomm® 9150 C-V2X chipset solution and CICT’s LTE-V2X module, the DMD31.

LTE-V2X is a global solution for V2X communications designed to improve automotive safety, automated driving and traffic efficiency. LTE-V2X is also the only V2X technology based on the globally recognized 3GPP specifications with an evolutionary path towards 5G New Radio (5G NR). Additionally, the direct communication mode of LTE-V2X operates in the 5.9 GHz Intelligent Transport System (ITS) spectrum without the use of cellular network or SIM. It allows highly reliable and real-time data exchange and information sharing between vehicles and their surroundings, enabling the synergy and coordination among automobiles, pedestrians and roadside infrastructure while facilitating the delivery of smart, connected transportation and the transformation of the global auto industry.

“The administrative regulation on using 5905-5925 MHz for direct communication among connected vehicles was announced on October 21 and marks the accelerated development of the intelligent, connected car industry,” said Dr. Yingmin Wang, chief engineer of Datang Telecom Group, a subsidiary of China Information and Communications Technology Group Corporation. “As an industry leader of Internet of Vehicles communications, Datang looks forward in continuing to work with Qualcomm Technologies to ensure the successful commercial deployment of V2X technologies domestically and globally, as well as further drive the evolution of LTE-V2X technology to 5G.”

“Qualcomm Technologies is committed to deliver automotive solutions that help transform transportation to make it safe, intelligent, and connected,” said Nakul Duggal, vice president of product management, Qualcomm Technologies. “We are thrilled to see continued efforts across the telecom and automotive industries to drive towards LTE-V2X commercial deployments in China, which includes our working relationship with Datang to accelerate the adoption of LTE-V2X in the country. With the recent Chinese spectrum allocation for LTE-V2X commercial deployments, the automotive industry is today one step closer towards improving road safety and traffic efficiency.”
