Nokia, Telecom Argentina drive new developer-created use cases and network monetisation

  • Agreement opens ecosystem development and innovative digital services opportunities based on standards of GSMA’s Open Gateway initiative for network operations in Latin America.
  • Agreement is another step in Telecom's strategy to monetize its network assets beyond connectivity, and strengthens its partnership with Nokia.

Espoo, Finland –Nokia and Telecom Argentina today announced a collaboration agreement in which Nokia’s Network as Code with developer portal will enable new developer-created use cases for consumer, enterprise, and industrial customers in Latin America markets. The agreement will help foster the GSMA’s Open Gateway ecosystem for network operations in Latin America.

Through Nokia’s Network as code platform with developer portal, developers will be able to harness Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and other software development tools to access network functionality and data in the form of software code that can be built into applications for enterprise, industrial, and consumer use cases for Telecom Argentina’s Latin America markets.

Under the agreement, Telecom Argentina will be able to carry out technical tests and develop use cases to enhance and deploy services faster in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
The Network as Code platform with developer portal was created using technical standards produced through industry initiatives such as the GSMA Open Gateway initiative and the Linux Foundation CAMARA project. Nokia and Telecom Argentina are active contributors to both initiatives.

The platform is based on a revenue share model between developers, operators, and Nokia as the platform provider. Nokia has signed collaboration agreements with 10 network operators and ecosystem partners to use the platform since its launch in September 2023.

Shkumbin Hamiti, Head of Network Monetization Platform, Cloud and Network Services, at Nokia, said: “I am very pleased to see our Network as Code platform with developer portal expand its reach into Latin America. Telecom Argentina has been a key Nokia partner for many years in the region, and we look forward to enhancing its network monetization efforts and enlisting developers to create new use cases and additional value for its customers.”

Roberto Nobile, CEO at Telecom Argentina and member of the GSMA Board, said: "At Telecom Argentina, we are evolving into a technology company, integrating new 100 percent digital ventures with connectivity as their cornerstone. Since last year, as GSMA’s Open Gateway Champions in Argentina, we have been actively participating and reaffirming our calling to foster innovation and facilitate the development of applications and services that drive the advancement of the digital economy.

“We have recently introduced SIM Swap, our inaugural API under this new business model, and we are steadily advancing along our application roadmap. We are happy to expand our partnership with Nokia to enable the monetization of network programmability and to enhance the Telecom Argentina customer experience in the region.”
