Stuart Carlaw, Chief Research Officer, ABI Research

It's a simple equation, says Stuart Carlaw. There's going to be lots of traffic - much of it video - so telcos need a way to carry it economically or their business model collapses. What they really need is a tool-kit of different solutions so they can go into any environment to provide the best possible coverage and capacity. Fortunately the convergence of carrier WiFi, small cells and distributed antenna systems means that there are three technological solutions all going for the same part of the business. Small cells will comprise a key part of that tool-kit and therefore provide a lot of the answers.
