Not enough licensed capacity for demand, so the need for mobile offload to unlicensed wi-fi is very compelling for carriers. The Wi-Fi Alliance commissioned a report on total cost of ownership for carrier wi-fi, showing how it is a highly affordable solution for telcos to compliment small cell deployments. It also paves the way for telcos to offer additional over the top services. Plus, there is a clear technology roadmap to upgrade wi-fi with faster speeds and greater performance capabilities.
