Chaesub Lee, Director, Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, ITU

The ITU will begin its 5G work at the World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC15) this November, with an ongoing discussion into the vision and requirements of 5G leading up to the next WRC in 2019, where spectrum issues will be discussed and hopefully assigned. 5G will follow the route of previous generations of wireless standards through the ITU, where it will be known as IMT-2020, but unlike 3G and 4G it will also impact on the backbone network. Hence the view of the Director of ITU-T, that 5G be "fixed-mobile hybrid, smart ubiquitous networks".
