Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS combined to dominate 89.7 per cent of the US smartphone market in the final weeks of 2012, according to a new report issued by digital research firm comScore. Android ended December with 53.4 per cent of all smartphones nationwide, growing 0.9 per cent over September, while iOS improved by 2 per cent to 36.3 per cent.

BlackBerry closed out 2012 with 6.4 per cent of the US smartphone market, down from 8.4 per cent in September. Microsoft’s Windows Phone follows at 2.9 per cent, sliding 0.7 percentage points. The news is notable considering Nokia and other Windows phone vendors released a number of high-end Windows Phone 8 devices during the quarter. Symbian held steady at 0.6 per cent.
