FCC’s streamlining of wireless siting rules will spur 5G investment & deployment

WASHINGTON –CTIA said today that the Federal Communications Commission’s decision to streamline wireless siting rules will accelerate 5G deployment, spur significant new investment, innovation and job creation and help the United States win the global race to 5G.

A recent Accenture report showed that modernizing federal reviews of new wireless infrastructure - like the reforms enacted by the FCC - could lower costs by $1.6 billion over 9 years. The wireless industry will need to deploy hundreds of thousands of modern wireless antennas - small cells - in the next few years to keep up with increasing consumer demand for wireless data and to build out new 5G networks.

“The FCC’s decisive action will help America win the global 5G race by significantly reducing the number of months to deploy 5G networks and decreasing the cost to build out new small cells by almost a third,” said Meredith Attwell Baker, CTIA President and CEO. “The reforms will make a big difference in how quickly these more powerful networks can be installed for consumers and communities across the nation.”

The FCC’s common sense approach modernizes the federal siting process for new 5G wireless infrastructure which is far smaller than traditional towers and should be treated like other similar kinds of infrastructure.

The Accenture analysis commissioned by CTIA also found that the United States will see a 550% rise in small cells by this year, underscoring the timeliness of the FCC’s action to jumpstart broadband investment. Small cell deployments will escalate rapidly from roughly 13,000 deployed in 2017 to over 800,000 cumulatively deployed by 2026, according to the analysis.

CTIA has produced a new video showing how quickly and unobtrusively a small cell can be installed on a suburban street.
