Uncorked! A Celebration of Spanish Wines

Jun 24, 2021

Pierre Mansour, Director of Wine, The Wine Society

Most of us have attended the mobile industry’s annual MWC event in Barcelona - year after year in many cases - and have sampled the many delights that the city has to offer. Whether at a networking event or at a bar or restaurant, wine is never very far away. We’ve all wrestled with wine lists, often with mixed results. Fear not, as TelecomTV is on hand to offer you assistance. With the help of The Wine Society’s Pierre Mansour - an expert on Spanish wines - we hope to make it easier and more rewarding for you to recognise and select the best wines.

Pierre has selected four wines from four separate regions of Spain, each with its own distinct characteristics. He explains the reasons behind his choices and what you should look out for. He also reveals why Spain is such a leading producer of wine, and gives the more adventurous of us some tips on other choice wines.

If you want to try the bottles featured, then we offer you two choices:

If you’re in the UK, then consider joining The Wine Society and buying these wines direct. Many of us at TelecomTV are members; it is well worth your consideration.

If you’re not a UK resident, then we recommend you take the list to your favourite local merchant and try and obtain bottles that way, or get the best match you can. Or give the Society a call and see if they can help.

And next time you’re in Barcelona for MWC, remember our selections - hopefully they will help you make more sense of the local wine lists and add to your enjoyment of your visit.

Featured Wines:

The Society’s Cava Reserva Brut NV
The Society's Cava is made by Sumarroca, a small family estate in Penedès, who use the traditional cava grapes (parellada, macabeo and xarel-lo) plus a touch of chardonnay to add finesse. What makes Sumarroca stand out from other cava producers is that they age the wine on its lees for an extended period of 30 months.

Pazo de Villarei Albariño, Rías Baixas 2020
A lovely fruity introduction to the fresh, aromatic quality of Spain's now famous north-west grape, albariño, a wine that is famously wonderful with seafood.

Viña Zorzal Garnacha, Navarra 2019
A fresh and delicious Spanish garnacha with bags of charm, red-berry fruit, plump texture and modest weight. A gem with grilled meats or paprika-spiked paella.

The Society's Exhibition Rioja Reserva 2015
A smooth, savoury and stylish Exhibition-label bottling from La Rioja Alta in Spain. The 2015 is fuller than previous vintages yet retains the graceful, silky expression of this traditional-style Rioja made from long ageing in American oak barrels.
