Greetings and welcome to Win-Win Live. I'm Tony Poulos, contributing editor at TelecomTV. MasOrange is the leading operator in the Spanish market by number of customers, user experience via its fibre and mobile coverage. It's actively working towards an AI-centric network. So we've asked Pilar Puerta Galvan, transmission director of MasOrange to outline how this is being achieved. Hello, Pilar. Firstly, in the fast-growing AI era, how does MasOrange see the impact of AI on the transmission network, and how are you preparing for the network and for future customer needs?
Pilar Puerta Galvan, MasOrange (00:45):
Well, when we talk about AI, artificial intelligence, many people think first about software, algorithms, or digital services, but in my work, the transmission network is something much bigger. For us, Artificial Intelligence is pushing us to rethink the basics of how our network works and how we deliver value to our customer. And maybe the most important thing is that our customer use our transmission network all the days, even if they never notice. And how do they feel it? They feel it when a service doesn't slow down, when they don't feel any congestion or just everything all works. So this invisible stability is the result of many years in our transmission network. And think this is very important for our clients. But answering to you about how are we preparing for the needs of the future, I can tell you that first of all, now today we have our transmission net highly redundant and very strong.
(01:50):
So I always say that a good transmission network is like a city with many roads. If the traffic closes in any road, the traffic can go to another road and the people that inside the car, they even no notice the difference. So that is how we design our transmission network. We design with high quality, multiple paths, and we have instant protection. So if something happens in one part of the network, the traffic switches automatically to the other part. There is no disruption, no cut, no notice, nobody noticed nothing. So this reliability is absolutely a key to get the trust of our clients. How are preparing the network for the future? But we are preparing by two things. First of all, we are doing through innovation. I am very proud of one live trial that we have performed. And in this trial, we get two terabits per second. This milestone, we don't do it in a lab or in a control environment.
(03:01):
We do it in our real network. So achieving this speed over one wavelength is not only something that we have obtained with technical capacity. It's something that's so vision and shows that we proves that our network can support all the massive growth that the AI will bring, more data, more services, more real-time application. And for me, this is something very simple, but very strong. That is that MasOrange network is prepared to the next generation of digital services. And third, we have talked about the innovation and third part, and I think that this part is the most transformative part. We are transforming our network in a network more smarter through AI and automation. AI, and this is real happening in our network. The AI is helping us to rethink all the things that we do. For example, we have to do the plan of the network, the deployment, the operation, and the maintenance.
(04:13):
And we do lots of tasks very manually, but with AI, we want to do it in another way. And these tasks and all these things that we have to do, they are necessary and take us time. But what we want is that the network can learn, can anticipate, can react and adjust directly. And if something happens in the network, the network can be react and nobody has to know it. And this is why our objective is advanced step by step to the autonomous network level four. This will give us faster operations, fewer errors, and even higher service quality. And at the end, this is what matters, creating more value to our customer. So to summarise, Tony, we have a strong network and network. We have this today, but we are choosing innovation for tomorrow and we are building a smarter network using the AI and all automation, but this will be for the network of tomorrow.
(05:35):
And why? Why is this all of this is because our customer can enjoy something very simple, a service that works. They don't have to notice the companies that they have below them.
Tony Poulos, TelecomTV (05:48):
Well, as a customer, I agree with you completely. If the network is working, I'm a happy person. MasOrange has been investing strongly in the evolution of its network, as you said, 5G standalone and 5G-Advanced to support the new AI-driven next generation digital services. With such an advanced network already deployed in Spain, how is MasOrange using this infrastructure to create value and drive business growth? The critical factors.
Pilar Puerta Galvan, MasOrange (06:17):
When we talk about how our network creates value at MasOrange, I always like to start with something very simple, but very important. It's a great network. It's not a network that we build or that you can build. It's a network is something that allows the whole company to grow. So in MasOrange in Spain, we have spent the last years transforming our transmission network. And also we have advancing in our other mobile capabilities such as 5G standalone or 5G-Advanced. All of this is to make sure that we are ready to meet the new digital wave powered by AI. So let me explain how this becomes real value in three parts. The three parts is that the evolution of our transmission network give us scalability and efficiency for the future. Over time, we have modernised the transmission network. So it can grow naturally with all the traffic of tomorrow, all the traffic that's coming from AI, cloud, and real-time services.
(07:26):
One of the thing I'm most proud of is how far a single wavelength can go today. It can evolve from 800G to even to terabytes as we have proved in the last trial that we have performed the last month. This evolution makes the network a true engine for sustainable business expansion. The second thing is that the new technologies, think of the 5G standalone of 5G-Advanced, help us to offer a better service and new opportunities for our clients, customers. With 5G standalone, we have a real core and we have they are more faster, they are more flexible, and they are ready for advanced services. And with the 5G-Advanced of 5.5G, with that, we have even more speed, more intelligence, and better support for AI-based application. These technologies help us to give a better offer to our customer and companies. And the last thing, the innovation network are already prepared for the next wave of digital services with two terabits per second live trial that permits us to achieve, that has permitted to achieve terabits in a single wavelength.
(08:53):
We have using the most advanced optical technology, and it's the best example of that it was in a laboratory, it was in our real network. So we are prepared for all. And we have performed many other tests. We have performed previously another trial in which we joined the C+L spectrum bands in only one fibre, and we get 96 terabytes of capacity in only one fibre. So this is another thing that is not technical milestone. It's tell to our customers and partners that we can support wherever the future brings, AI services, edge computing, immersive application, or all that the demands that are coming. And the result is that when people trusting your network, trusting your business. The evolution of our transmission network and all the 5G standalone, the 5G-Advanced give us more capacity, more efficiency, and more possibilities for new services and tools and terms, our network in a real engine that for value creation, a long-term business growth for MasOrange.
Tony Poulos, TelecomTV (10:13):
Wow. Well, looking ahead to the future of telecommunications networks, what role do you think encryption, including post-quantum and quantum encryption, will play in protecting network infrastructure? From a B2B perspective, what are enterprise customers asking for today in terms of security? And finally, can security become a real differentiating factor for the operators in Spain? When you talk about the future of networks, we tend to think about speed, capacity, and automation, but there is another element that is becoming just as important. It's security.
Pilar Puerta Galvan, MasOrange (10:49):
Why? Because our society is more digital and it's essential for us to protect the basics of what makes that our network can work. So for me, in this context, the encryption will play a very important role. Then you ask me if the encryption will be important in the future. Yes. I think encryption will be a key pillar in the future of how we protect our networks. Today, the encryption mechanisms we are using are very strong and effective, but you know that the quantum computing is coming so in the future and the medium term will be also safe. So perhaps it's not a problem for today, for tomorrow morning, but certainly it will be a problem in the future. That is, in MasOrange, we are already thinking about how to evolve toward a post-quantum encryption. For us, it's important to do it without impacting in the performance or in the stability of our network.
(12:07):
And you asked me too about what happens with B2B and encryption. In the B2B world, the security is not longer an optional. It's something that they need is a basic for them. So what is very clearly is they is not unknown for the B2B companies. It's part of the service. Sector like banking, healthcare, industrial automation, they want guarantee the confidentiality of the data. The resilience of the network are the business continuity. For them, the network must not only connect, the network must also protect. So our job, we are the engineers, our job is to make this simple. We need to integrate the security inside the connectivity. Instead of adding multiple layers, we have to do it simple, not complex. And how the security is becoming a real differentiator because I think that this is not about technology, this is about trust. It's very important. Security is not only selling technology to our clients or our customers.
(13:24):
They want that the operation be safe, reliable, and resilient. So the networks of the future in Spain, in MasOrange, will be automated, will be powered by AI and security, and will be integrated with this security end-to-end, not at a separate component.
Tony Poulos, TelecomTV (13:45):
