The specifications for a new cellular core to replace the existing EPC (enhanced packet core) of LTE networks was introduced by 3GPP in Release 15. Whilst the earliest implementations of 5G NR in the radio access network still used the LTE core, the so-called “standalone mode” of 5G utilises a brand new core network. This 5G Core will deliver the full promise of 5G systems, enabling the creation and delivery of a new generation of services.
