Rakuten Mobile CTO Sharad Sriwastawa appointed to board of directors of O-RAN Alliance

Tokyo – The O-RAN Alliance is a world-wide community of over 300 operators, vendors, research and academic institutions operating in the RAN industry. Founded in February 2018 and established as a German entity in August 2018, the organisation’s mission is to re-shape the industry towards more intelligent, open, virtualised and fully interoperable mobile networks. By defining O-RAN architecture and specifications, the O-RAN Alliance aims to enable an open, interoperable supply chain ecosystem in full support of and complementary to standards promoted by 3GPP and other industry standards organisations.

“I am delighted to join the board of directors of the O-RAN Alliance on behalf of Rakuten Mobile,” said Sharad Sriwastawa, CTO of Rakuten Mobile. “With the learnings of our experience in building the world’s first end-to-end fully virtualised, cloud native mobile network*1 on Open RAN principles, I look forward to contributing to the promotion of the formulation of specifications for Open RAN around the globe.”

Rakuten Mobile joined the O-RAN Alliance in 2020 and continues to strive to contribute to the technical development of innovative, open and intelligent RAN. Tareq Amin, CEO of Rakuten Mobile, served as a director of the organisation between November 2020 and October 2022 *2
