Nokia CFO Timo Ihamuotila called the fourth quarter of 2012 “the last meaningful quarter for Symbian” – the mobile operating system that once dominated its smartphone portfolio. During a conference call yesterday, Ihamuotila said Nokia sold 2.2m Symbian devices during the fourth quarter, while in comparison, sales of Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone reached 4.4m. Ihamuotila added that Nokia will focus its efforts on a mix of Windows Phone devices, Series 40-based smartphones and lower-end handsets.
Once the world's largest smartphone OS in terms of market share, Symbian powered just 2.3 per cent of all smartphones shipped worldwide during the third quarter of 2012, according to IDC data. In 2011, Nokia transferred Symbian software development and support to Accenture.
