MediaTek aims to raise smartphone chip profile in 2013

Jan 9, 2013

Taiwan’s MediaTek was the number three smartphone applications processor vendor in the world in Q3 2012, according to Strategy Analytics. In 2012, MediaTek shipped between 500m and 550m chipsets, mainly for feature phones, according to Finbarr Moynihan, the company’s platform marketing director.

The firm shipped 110 million smartphone chips in 2012, the majority being its system-on-a-chip platform, which runs a single-core 1GHz design from ARM Holdings, and supports an HSPA modem and version 4.0 of Android. In June MediaTek announced a dual-core chip and last month unveiled a quad-core solution, which Alcatel One Touch is using for its Scribe HD smartphone.
