Tokyo, January 15, 2018 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) today announced the launch of a new product and service in cooperation with GE Digital that enhance security for the Information Technology (IT)/ Operational Technology (OT) space of industrial control systems for critical infrastructure, including electricity, gas, water supply, transportation and manufacturing facilities.
The new "OT security assessment service" helps to ensure the security of industrial control systems by combining NEC and GE's know-how in order to evaluate potential security risks within social infrastructure and factory facilities and then proposing security improvements that combine the strengths of a variety of NEC solutions.
Moreover, the provision of GE's "OT security appliance (OpShield)," will help to detect unauthorized access within the communications of industrial control systems.
In October 2016, NEC entered a comprehensive partnership with GE (*) in the field of IoT and established a system to provide total support for development, installation and maintenance of IoT solutions. The launch of this service and product are results of the partnership's commitment to develop Cyber Security Solutions in the OT and IT space.
Industrial control systems have conventionally operated in environments that are separate from the Internet and business systems. However, in recent years, the importance of modernization and security enhancements for industrial control systems has become increasing clear.
"This new service and product are important outcomes from our partnership with GE," said Suhun Yun, Deputy General Manager, Smart Networks Division, NEC Corporation. "Going forward, NEC will continue to promote more robust security for social infrastructure and factories by combining a wide range of advanced solutions, including cyber security, edge gateway and SDN technologies."
"As more industrial assets get connected and allow for remote access, companies need to better understand their level of risk," said Carolee Gearhart, Chief Ecosystem and Channels Officer, GE Digital. "The launch of NEC's OT security assessment service is an important step in securing the Industrial Internet, helping customers understand their risk profile, and define their OT security strategy. We will continue to strengthen our collaboration with NEC and drive better outcomes for our customers."
