KDDI certifies Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem on carrier’s LPWA networks

January 31, 2020 - SAN DIEGO, USA: Japanese network operator KDDI CORPORATION has certified our cutting-edge Qualcomm® 9205 LTE IoT modem's capabilities for their 3GPP Release-14 LTE-M network, helping set the stage for the growth of IoT in Japan.

The Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem is the next step in providing highly integrated and efficient power consumption solutions for IoT devices. Thanks to its Power Class 5 multi-band power amplifier, it comes with a fully integrated RF front-end, and its modem is engineered to reduce power consumption by up to 70% in idle mode compared to its predecessor – a critical consideration for battery-powered IoT devices that need to operate for 10 years or longer in the field. The modem is also 50% smaller and more cost-effective than its predecessor – making it ideal for the low-power, wide-area, small form factor requirements of modern IoT.

“With its small form factor, made possible by the fully integrated Power Class 5 amplifier and RF front end, along with its highly energy-efficient multimode modem and integrated GNSS and cloud SDK offerings, the Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem will drive LTE IoT solutions that are both powerful in performance and economical with long-lasting battery life,” said Vieri Vanghi, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Europe, Inc. “The Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem counts dozens of design wins across more than 27 licensees to date and we are pleased to receive KDDI’s operational network certification to continue to make the Internet of Things a global reality today.”

“Following Japan’s first commercial LTE-M network launch in January 2018, KDDI quickly achieved nationwide LTE-M coverage in June 2018, as LPWA LTE-M plays an important role in KDDI’s IoT business strategy,” said Hiroshi Tsuji, General Manager, Product and Device Technology Department, KDDI. “We hope the enhanced features and capabilities in the Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem will help further accelerate development of LTE-M based solutions on KDDI’s IoT network.”
