World's largest NFV network, built exclusively by ZTE, starts commercialization trial

Via ZTE Press Center

Jun 6, 2016

6 June 2016, Shenzhen, China – ZTE Corporation (0763.HK / 000063.SZ), a major international provider of telecommunications, enterprise and consumer technology solutions for the Mobile Internet, today announced that China Mobile has officially initiated the commercialisation of its rich communication services (RCS) network. As its strategic partner, ZTE worked with China Mobile to build this virtual IP multimedia subsystem (vIMS) based RCS project, which is the world’s largest vIMS network.

In October 2014, ZTE won the tender to become the system integrator of this project. As such, ZTE provides the complete IMS-based RCS solution, with the initial capacity planned to be 100 million subscribers, and supports RCS including multimedia messaging, network voice calling, video calling and address book capabilities. This project is the world’s largest known commercial network functions virtualisation (NFV) IMS network.

China Mobile has already deployed the IMS network in its existing network. By the time the new service is introduced, it will be clear that IMS network development and deployment is accelerating, which means the vIMS era is coming. Building RCS in an NFV-based vIMS platform standardises uniform equipment, enabling service and hardware decoupling, and automatic deployment and flexible scale-in/out of service bearer networks, improving the resource utilisation ratio. This will guarantee system response speed, shorten service deployment and expansion periods, helping operators to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) and guarantee smooth system evolution.

Mr. Gong Dehua, vice president of ZTE core network product line, said:

“ZTE’s RCS converged communication system re-defines basic communication services allowing China Mobile to build new calling, messaging and contact services. It also allows the upgrading of traditional voice and messaging service experiences, realising new information service platforms with open capabilities and channels.”

In this project, ZTE provides an RCS open gateway conforming to GSMA specifications, which fully opens up service engine capabilities, provides an external interface, supports quick and easy access to third party applications, helps operators to extend into other areas of the industry - enterprise, family applications etc., and expands vertical industry applications as it builds and adds value to the mobile ecosphere.

At present, ZTE’s NFV virtualized core network possesses 12 commercial contracts, 32 proof of concept (PoC) projects, and has developed a deep cooperation with Vodafone, Telefonica, VimpelCom and several other mainstream operators, allowing operators to build consistent and innovative intelligent networks.
