This Strategy Analytics research estimates that Qualcomm , MediaTek , Apple , Samsung LSI and Spreadtrum represent the top-five revenue rankings in the global smartphone AP market in 1H 2016. Despite intense competition, Qualcomm held up well and topped the smartphone AP market with 39 percent revenue share, followed by MediaTek with 23 percent and Apple with 15 percent. Strategy Analytics estimates that 64-bit APs accounted for two-thirds of total smartphone AP shipments in 1H 2016.

Sravan Kundojjala, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics, commented, “ Qualcomm maintained its smartphone AP market share leadership despite MediaTek’s strong inroads in 1H 2016. After a less successful 2015, Qualcomm continued to recover its flagship market share with the newly launched Snapdragon 820, which featured in several flagships including the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, LG G5, Xiaomi Mi 5, OnePlus 3 and others. Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 652, 650 and 400 series of chips also gained good traction during 1H 2016 and helped Qualcomm to maintain volume.”

Stuart Robinson, Executive Director of the Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies service, added, “ HiSilicon , MediaTek , Samsung LSI and Spreadtrum all registered a strong double-digit shipment growth in 1H 2016.

  • Samsung LSI and HiSilicon are dependent upon Samsung Mobile and Huawei respectively, and continued to capitalize on their flagship success plus expansion into the mid-range.

  • MediaTek, on the other hand, maintained good momentum with increased shipments of its LTE-integrated APs.

  • Spreadtrum maintained its lead in 3G APs and increased its LTE AP shipments in 1H 2016.
