Huawei released Global 1st VR Ready Network technology solution & prototype in VR/AR World 2016

[UK, London, October 19th , 2016] Global VR/AR Network World Forum 2016 opened in London, UK. Being the 1st VR network forum in industry, it was promoted and sponsored by HUAWEI Network Technology Laboratory, and attracted co-participation of leading authentic experts in VR network industry, together with the world’s top players, such as Vodafone, British Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Nokia, HTC, BBC, CNN, etc. During this forum, HUAWEI released the 1st VR Ready Network innovative solution and prototype in industry, which won high recognition from participants, and held an on-site workshop to dig into ideas & directions in the field of joint innovation according to participants’ request.

At this point, only 14 months passed since from Oculus Rift, the 1st consumer VR product, released in industry.

VR challenges the bearer network far more than any other visual media evolutions in the past, from black & white to color, SD to HD, etc. VR will bring immersive video experience to innumerable homes, and will affect people’ life & communication in a profound way. Since the variation of viewing distance, the viewing angle of 50 inch LCD TV only covers approximately 2% of VR glasses, which means that 8K resolution, the peak image quality of current TVs, is the most basic configuration in VR products. VR network bandwidth demands tens of times of current network capacity or even higher. In addition, VR immersive experience has also put forward more stringent requirements to bearer network in latency, and burst tolerance. Therefore, revolutionary innovations in network technology are necessary to effectively support online VR development and open VR Internet Era.

To face the challenges introduced by VR network, such as high bandwidth, low latency and high burst, Huawei first proposed the innovative VR Ready network solution in industry, and released some ideas to solve key problems on VR bearer network. That includes non-blocking architecture, latency optimized overlay network (Live-MDN), deterministic low latency IP network (DIP), and next generation high throughput transport layer. Huawei also discussed deeply with a number of partners on cooperation based on their own network operation issues, and proposed specific solutions for various business scenarios.

The on-site demonstrated VR-oriented latency prior network prototype gained high attention and recognition from participants, and pushed VR a big step forward to the Internet Era. With continuous breakthroughs in VR network technology, VR will definitely bloom into bright future in the Internet Era.
