Defining connectivity at sea

Via Inmarsat Media Centre

07 September 2015: How is big data revolutionising shipping? Should broadband be available to all at sea?

Benin telemedicine

The answer to these questions, along with all the latest industry trends, can be found in Maritime CEO’s ‘Defining Connectivity at Sea’ supplement.

The 16-page magazine, which looks at the future of satellite communications, features an interview with Inmarsat Maritime President Ronald Spithout, who discusses why apps will dramatically change the landscape of shipping.

Big data

“All owners are talking about big data, apps, connectivity and so on but no one has cracked a global satellite solution,” he said.

“The reason apps have not worked so far in maritime is because owners did not know the cost of having them, bandwidth-wise.”

A Maritime CEO survey of 150 owners and managers carried out for the magazine put global coverage above even pricing in terms of maritime communications priorities, and Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress service offers a global satellite solution.

Following the roll out of Inmarsat Global Xpress at the end of 2015, the maritime hybrid Ka-band/L-band Fleet Xpress service will offer seamless connectivity that delivers the world’s first globally available, high-speed broadband service from a single network operator, meeting those bandwidth needs.

You can read the full interview in the online version of the supplement here, which is also being distributed at London International Shipping Week on 7-11 September, of which Inmarsat is a Diamond sponsor.
