Virtualisation of the network is continuing and expanding with 5G. Whilst the industry started by virtualizing the core network it is now moving closer to the antenna. Virtual RAN brings numerous benefits to CSPs centering around flexibility in the way that they allocate capacity and use software upgrades to bring new technologies to market very quickly. HPE has built a new vRAN hardware platform with software from Samsung. The vRAN architecture puts the control processing in the core network, which doesn't have the same computation requirements of the user plane, whilst the user plane itself is pushed closer to the edge of the network, enabling lower latency and faster responsiveness from the network. Security is also better because user data can remain local to an enterprise location.
