We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Mike Short CBE as AWTG’s new Chairman, bringing with him a wealth of experience, industry insight, and a global network that will support AWTG’s continued growth, innovation, and international expansion.
Dr. Mike Short has had a career pursuing innovation and research largely in telecommunications and satcomms. Most recently, this has included a Chief Architect role at the Satellite Applications Catapult and Distinguished Visitor at NPL. He continues to work on the convergence of Mobile / Satellite networks and helping the sector develop with new technologies such as AI and Quantum. He also chairs the advisory boards for both the UK Telecoms Labs (on behalf of NPL) and the UK Telecoms Innovation Network respectively and is currently a Visiting Professor at UCL and University of Surrey.
He also formerly served as elected Chairman of the Global GSMA and as President of the IET and he was awarded a CBE for services to the Telecommunications Industry in 2012.
“Building on firm foundations serving the telecoms industry, I am particularly impressed by the AWTG growth seen in recent years in private networks, AI and in operational systems for key sectors such as Transport, Health Systems and Satellite Communications”, said Dr. Mike Short.
Abbey Alidoosti, Chief Executive Officer of AWTG, commented: “Mike’s appointment as Charmain is a pivotal moment for AWTG, Mike has 30 years’ experience working in Mobile Communications networks, most of which he spent as a Director/Vice President in telecommunications with Telefonica Europe and its prior owners. He subsequently worked in the Department of International Trade (DIT) from November 2017 – March 2023 as the Department’s first Chief Scientific Adviser (Dept of Business and Trade since February 2023).
At the same time, AWTG bids farewell to Tony Sceales, who is stepping down as Non-Executive Chairman after three and a half transformative years. Tony’s thoughtful leadership, collaborative spirit, and dedication have played an important role in shaping our journey. We are deeply grateful for the integrity and clarity. We extend our sincere thanks to Tony for his invaluable contributions and wish him continued success in his future endeavours.
