ETSI PoC #32: NFV for Real-Time OSS/BSS

Introduction

At NFV World Congress  Openet, Procera Networks and Amartus showed a live demonstration of an integrated solution showing how NFV concepts can be applied to OSS/BSS to deliver on the promises of NFV, such as increased system agility, faster time to market, reduced TCO, increased elasticity, and greater service availability.

Virtualisation of OSS and BSS functions such as DPI, policy, charging and analytics is essential to achieving a dynamic network environment that can keep pace with, and monetise new service innovation. This extends to access control, and broader revenue handling systems.

This proof of concept, endorsed by Vodafone, brought together a number of industry leaders in virtualised OSS/BSS –Openet, Procera, Cobham Wireless and Amartus, working with OpenStack leader Red Hat, and leading computing innovation company Intel. This POC demonstrated:

  • How virtualised PCC components (PCRF, PCEF and OCS) provide telco grade performance, scalability and resilience in a virtualised environment using Intel processors and Red Hat software suites
  • A distributed policy management system collaborating across multiple policy management domains via multiple policy management components i.e. PCRF, PCEF and ANDSF server.
  • End-to-end lifecycle management and orchestration of PCC VNFs utilizing two VNF managers from different vendors including on boarding, upgrading, updating and patching of in-service VNFs.
  • The integration of analytics and orchestration to enable scaling automation and VNF resource allocation, based on the real time monitoring of VNFs and a combination of historical data and machine learning to predict demand and mitigate underutilization of assigned resources.
  • The capability of the system to automatically respond to and recover from a node failure.
  • The ability of a virtualised DPI to approach bare metal performance using Intel architecture and SR-IOV
  • How complex NFV and E2E services can be introduced into the dynamic service catalog driven NFV Orchestrator at run-time, increasing Service Agility and Velocity through full service life-cycle automation and orchestration
