Fastweb and Starlink partner for a technical pilot to expand mobile coverage in rural areas

  • The companies will begin with a technical pilot in the Apennines, the first of its kind in Italy, to test Starlink Mobile’s satellite technology, paving the way to deliver satellite-to-mobile coverage to remote and underserved areas

Fastweb, Italian’s telecom operator, has joined forces with Starlink to deliver connectivity in remote locations. As part of the partnership, we will first carry out a Direct to Cell technical pilot in the Apennines area, which will be the first of its kind in Italy.

The mobile network of Fastweb + Vodafone shall be combined with Starlink’s satellite-to-mobile technology in order to enable direct communication with unmodified mobile devices with 4G capabilities. Rather than relying on terrestrial Radio access network, the service leverages Starlink’s satellite constellation in Low Earth Orbit, which functions as cell towers in space — each one capable of delivering mobile connectivity directly to standard handsets from 360 kilometers above the ground.

The combination of terrestrial mobile infrastructure and satellite network can expand and enhance connectivity options by providing access in remote areas, high mountain regions or coastal environments where terrestrial coverage is limited or non-existent, ensuring more comprehensive and efficient connectivity.

When a terrestrial signal is lost, phones seamlessly switch to Starlink technology, ensuring access to data and text messages without the need for any action from the user. Fastweb + Vodafone customers will have data available on their devices to use such new technology-enabled apps as WhatsApp and Google Maps, as well as SMS and MMS messaging services.

“Starlink Mobile has transformed how customers can stay connected with reliable coverage in remote locations where terrestrial cellphone signals cannot reach,” said Stephanie Bednarek, Vice President of Commercial Sales at SpaceX. “We’re so excited to partner with Fastweb in delivering this satellite to mobile service that will enhance customers experiences’ with the capabilities to use voice, video and message through apps as well as text messaging.”

“Our aim is to contribute to the digitalization of the country” – said Marco Raimondi, Head of B2C Products in Fastweb + Vodafone – “In this way, Fastweb is once again positioning itself at the forefront of innovation in the telecommunications sector in Italy, developing a pioneering and comprehensive mobile connectivity solution for our customers.”
