For many, summer is a time to sit back, relax and get away from it all. A new survey of more than 6,000 Americans highlights some of the ways mobile technology has become one of their road trip necessities and is helping make that happen, including traveling light, finding things to do and sharing experiences with friends and family back home.

According to the survey, families will use smartphones and tablets to make long road trips seem shorter: Forty-five percent say listening to music on their mobile device is their favorite way to pass the time, while 12 percent stream movies. They won’t waste time hunting for things to do, either. Thirty percent say they’ll use their smartphone or tablet to search for nearby events.

Vacations and “staycations” can also be learning experiences. Nearly 80 percent say they’ll encourage their children to use mobile technology for educational purposes over the summer.

Seventy-two percent say they no longer need to pack a camera, thanks to smartphones such as the new Samsung Galaxy S6, whose 16-megapixel camera means they won’t have to sacrifice photo quality. Books and magazines also stay home, according to about 16 percent of those surveyed.
