The "5G Mobilizer " project was held on the 8th and 9th January at Altice Labs facilities in Aveiro. 60 representatives from 14 national industrial and academic entities met, and the first technical discussions were held to design, implement and validate an integrated set of technological products of national origin, capable of integrating and providing services in the context of future 5G networks.

This project, led by Altice Labs, will last for 36 months, extending to the end of 2020, presenting a perfect alignment with the current development and production schedule of 5G technology worldwide.

The 5G technology, still in development, is due to go into production in 2020, representing a great technological advance, allowing even faster communications (in speed and response time), reliable and with less energy consumption. In addition to this evolution from a performance point of view, the 5G distinguishes itself from the previous generation (4G / LTE), by applying new concepts in its architecture, leading to greater flexibility and agility. Thus, with a single cellular mobile communications technology, it will be possible to support a large number of services, including mass and industrial IoT, and multimedia with augmented and virtual reality.

Besides the products to be implemented, the project will create synergies among the entities involved, becoming a national and international reference in the promotion of 5G technology and its startup and operation in Portugal. For this purpose, and in addition to other means of promotion, workshops will be held to show and discuss the achievements, involving external entities, national and international.

The entities that are part of the consortium are Altice Labs, Altran Portugal, EFACEC Energia, EFACEC Engenharia e Sistemas, INESC TEC, Instituto de Telecomunicações, IT Center, Nokia Solutions and Networks Portugal, One Source, PDMFC, UBIWHERE, University of Coimbra, TICE. PT and WAVECOM. In addition to these, other entities such as EDP, Infraestruturas de Portugal, MEO, Aveiro Port and VIATEL will follow up on the project.

The project, included in the "Mobilizing Programmes", is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Competitiveness and Internationalization Operational Programme (COMPETE 2020) under the Portugal 2020 Programme.
