Highlights of Qualcomm’s 5G Summit in Barcelona

Qualcomm’s 5G Summit in Barcelona 14-16 October brought together global OEMs, operators, and IHV/ISVs for leadership keynotes on 5G development and commercialisation. During his keynote speech, Cristiano Amon, President of Qualcomm, stressed the importance of working with all the stakeholders to unlock all the benefits of 5G. “It would be a mistake to think that only one company can do this, we have to work together,” he said. While praising the “incredible” achievements of 2019, Amon reminded the audience that this would not have been possible without the mobilisation of the entire ecosystem. He pointed to dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) as a key driver of coverage expansion since it enables 4G and 5G to co-exist using the same spectrum band. This will be “the most important feature we are going to see for the scale of 5G in 2020,” he promised. Qualcomm also unveiled a series of collaborative projects with key players in different industries such as Amazon, Microsoft, Bosch and Enel to showcase the benefits of 5G and notably game-changing gains in innovation and productivity.
