Strategy Analytics: Vehicle platform strategies, standards and new applications boost market potential for ethernet

Demand Will Increase To Nearly 588M Connected Sockets By 2023

Boston, MA - December 12, 2016– The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) held its most recent automotive Ethernet conference in Paris in October 2016.

While previous conferences charted the slow progress of Ethernet developments in automotive, the Strategy Analytics report, “ Automotive Ethernet: Vehicle Platform Strategies, Standards and New Applications to Boost Demand, ” comments on the more positive outlook for the high speed networking protocol.

Fears over high cost, data compression and the availability of rival protocols have limited Ethernet usage mainly to diagnostics ports at many car OEMs. However, the latest developments indicate greater desire by auto makers to adopt Ethernet than ever before.

Kevin Mak, Senior Analyst at the Automotive Practice of Strategy Analytics, said,

“The emergence of new, higher-speed standards, interoperability testing and the participation of more vendors will encourage more auto makers to adopt Ethernet. These factors are crucial in order for Ethernet to lower its cost and to encourage competition. This needs to be in place before new applications arrive which will demand gigabit speed multiplexing, such as autonomous vehicles, connected services, as well as high resolution cameras and displays.”

“But more crucial still will be the deployment of efficient, scalable E/E architectures that can be deployed as standard to new vehicle platforms. They will feature data ‘backbones’, which will enable further cost reductions and provide auto makers the flexibility to add new high bandwidth applications in the future, but without requiring a redesign of their architectures,” Mak added. “Such a strategy may see a wider implementation, beyond the luxury-branded, high model segments, as early as 2018.”
