Red Hat boosts application portability across hybrid cloud with .NET Core 2.0

Via Red Hat Newsroom

Aug 22, 2017

RALEIGH, N.C. — August 21, 2017 —

Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that it will support .NET Core 2.0, the latest version of the open source .NET Core project, on Red Hat’s portfolio of open technologies. A lightweight and modular platform for creating web applications and microservices, .NET Core 2.0 provides significant new developer capabilities while enabling developers to create .NET applications across platforms, and deploy on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, and more.

We believe that developers will be pleased to be able to write familiar .NET code from their platform of choice, and that operations teams, who use Red Hat solutions, will enjoy having the freedom to deploy to Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform on-premises or in Microsoft Azure. Scott Hunger director, Program Management, .NET, Microsoft Corp.

A key addition to the Red Hat Developer Program, the latest version of .NET Core supports .NET Standard 2.0, providing enhanced platform compatibility and portability across all .NET runtimes and workloads. It also helps to streamlineadds application packaging with easier access to ASP.NET 2.0 and EF Core 2.0, designed to further simplify the application build process in an all open source environment. Additionally, when combined with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and/or Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, the 2.0 release supports C#, F# and Visual Basic for the creation of modern, containerized applications.

Red Hat is the only commercial Linux provider to offer full, enterprise-grade support for .NET Core across its portfolio. Developers will be able to use .NET Core 2.0 to develop and deploy supported applications on:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Atomic Host

  • Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform

  • Red Hat OpenShift Online

  • Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated

  • Red Hat OpenStack Platform

Availability

.NET Core 2.0 will soon be available through various Red Hat products as RPMs for traditional yum installations or as Linux container images.

Supporting Quotes

Harry Mower, senior director, Developer Programs, Red Hat

“.NET is one of the most widely-used development platforms in the industry and Red Hat, as a major contributor to the .NET Core community, is helping to further expand the reach and capabilities of the technology. By supporting .NET on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, we are able to provide one of the broadest, supported and fully-open developer solutions on the market and offer organizations greater assurance that they can run .NET workloads on non-Windows-based systems in production, backed by Red Hat’s expertise and award-winning support.”

Scott Hunter, director, Program Management, .NET, Microsoft Corp.

".NET Core 2.0 marks a significant step forward for the .NET Core community and the developer world at-large, and we're very pleased to have closely collaborated on this new release with Red Hat. We believe that developers will be pleased to be able to write familiar .NET code from their platform of choice, and that operations teams, who use Red Hat solutions, will enjoy having the freedom to deploy to Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform on-premises or in Microsoft Azure."
