At long last – high speed gets the green light for areas near local exchanges, too
Deutsche Telekom has committed to connecting all households in areas near local exchanges to high-speed broadband and has submitted a binding investment undertaking. That was the basis on which the German Federal Network Agency this week subsequently specified the framework conditions for deploying vectoring technology in areas near local exchanges. Under certain conditions, other companies can also connect customers in these areas, insofar as they also make similar investment commitments. Every company must ensure access for third parties. The conditions for this are still to be specified in a separate regulatory procedure.
Deutsche Telekom is to make an additional investment of up to one billion euros and offer around six million more customers bandwidths of up to 100 Mbit/s. The company is already working flat out on more innovations, such as using super vectoring to make bandwidths in excess of 250 Mbit/s possible.
“I am pleased that the Federal Network Agency has set out the framework conditions for rollout in areas near local exchanges. Fiber broadband rollout is important for consumers, particularly in rural areas,” said Niek Jan van Damme, Board member of Deutsche Telekom, explaining the fiber buildout plans of Deutsche Telekom during the press conference for IFA. “We at Deutsche Telekom want to make an important contribution to ensuring broadband is available as widely as possible. Our goal is to supply 80 percent of all households with high-speed broadband.”
After months of controversial, often heated and very time-consuming discussions, van Damme called on all those involved to work together to deliver the German government’s broadband targets. Deutsche Telekom, he said, has kept its word and will play its part across Germany – in urban and rural areas – to ensure the Gigabit Society isn’t just a reality in major cities.
Performance in facts and figures
Deutsche Telekom has the largest fiber-optic network in Germany, stretching over 400,000 kilometers. In the last five years alone, over 120,000 kilometers of new fiber-optic cables have been laid. An additional 30,000 kilometers are added each year, which equates to more than 80 kilometers every day. As a result, the Deutsche Telekom network is bigger than all the networks of its competitors combined. The company is to invest 12 billion euros in infrastructure by 2018. This willingness to invest is paying off: In the first quarter of 2016, the number of fiber-optic broadband connections in Germany passed the five-million mark and, in the first half of 2016 alone, the company gained 1,200,000 new fiber-optic customers.
The 10-million mark for active LTE users has been cracked
When it comes to LTE coverage, Deutsche Telekom already reaches 91.4 percent of the German population. Some ten million Deutsche Telekom customers currently use LTE with a speed of up to 300 Mbit/s. However, standing still is the same as going backwards. That is why the focus is very much on the future. As part of the Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance and with its own innovation lab, 5G:haus, the telecommunications company is playing a key role in driving the development of 5G.
The journey continues: MagentaEINS 8.0 launched
Deutsche Telekom is underscoring the importance of combining technology and content with additional product highlights. The magenta journey continues this year, with MagentaEINS 8.0. Exactly two years ago, Deutsche Telekom launched MagentaEINS 1.0, which was followed by 2.0, 3.0 and so on. In May, the company raised the bar with EntertainTV. And so the story continues and customers can watch what they want, when they want, wherever they want. As of now, every MagentaEINS customer – whether new or existing – is getting EntertainTV mobil for tablet, smartphone and PC. And at no extra cost. It is important to point out that this offer is available to all MagentaEINS customers, including those who don’t yet have an Entertain package and only get Internet and telephone services from Deutsche Telekom.
“The company is also offering anyone who switches their fixed-network line to Deutsche Telekom and becomes a MagentaEINS customer the chance to get EntertainTV at home, too, for the entire 24-month duration of their contract – at no extra cost,” said Michael Hagspihl, Head of Consumers at Telekom Deutschland, during the launch of this year’s product campaign at IFA.
Music included: Exclusive collaboration with Apple
During the press conference, Hagspihl also revealed another partnership – with Apple. Deutsche Telekom customers can now try out Apple Music free for six months. That is twice as long as the free trial available directly through Apple Music itself. After the free trial, users can purchase the streaming service for 9.95 euros per month. The cost is charged as part of their phone bill.
Apple Music is the fastest-growing streaming service at the moment. More than ten million music lovers worldwide are already using it. This offer complements the company’s existing Spotify offer, thereby providing even more choice.
DayFlat unlimited: Surf until you drop
