Investment is really hotting-up on the fixed infrastructure side; is fibre the future?

The pandemic brought out how important the fixed network infrastructure is to business and society. The shift of investment to fibre access is gaining traction in many markets. The operational efficiency of fibre and its practically limitless bandwidth makes it the future-proof option for consumer and business access alike. Physical investment, digging ducts, stringing fibre from polls and lighting it all up does, however take time. Is the rush to install fibre justified? Should this be a national priority or left to the market ? Will 5G (best not even mention 6G at this point) deliver competitive services and isolate the fibre providers? What is a reasonable time horizon for return on the investment erupting in towns, cities and villages around the world?
