Naval Base Point Loma, Verizon announce enhanced connectivity with small cells

16th January - SAN DIEGO, USA: Verizon today announced a new wireless small cell deployment on Naval Base Point Loma, designed to improve network connection and bandwidth and lay the groundwork for 5G on the Navy base. This mission-critical communications partnership expands capabilities for tactical and public safety operations, urban development and force protection by enabling enhanced capacity and data transfer speeds. By improving the cellular experience, the Navy installation helps enhance support to Fleet operations and improves connectivity for on-base tenant commands and residents.

Verizon announced the installation at a ribbon cutting ceremony late last year that featured a host of attendees, including military personnel, contractors, and Verizon employees. The installation on Naval Base Point Loma will support more than 60 military tenant commands. This is the third small-cell installation on a Navy base in the San Diego area during 2019.

The 4G LTE small cell installations on Navy bases provides a dedicated cellular network for day-to-day operations, as well as emergencies, and will help enable 5G technology. The new infrastructure will also enhance operational readiness and increase connectivity ubiquitously across the base. Whether providing best-in-class ship maintenance and modernization, operational training, force protection, or fleet and family services, mobility and IoT solutions from Verizon connect people, data and systems in real-time. This small cell installation delivers on many smart installation challenges by providing improved signal penetration in the densely populated urban environment surrounding the installation, and by enabling intelligent tracking and management of assets, force protection and enhanced pier capability to support critical mission and services.

The Navy's ability to sustain its mission depends on the continued support of industry partners. Verizon is proud to celebrate its ability to support the Navy through the installation of 4G LTE small cells in Southern California.

"Verizon has worked with the military for decades to support mission-critical communication capabilities,” said Mike Maiorana, senior vice president, public sector, Verizon. “With this small cell installation, we are building a more responsive, agile and secure network to meet the Navy’s communication needs and are laying the groundwork for the Navy to leverage 5G technology down the road.”

Verizon offers the nation’s most reliable 4G LTE network.1 It is also leading the way to 5G. 5G promises to transform the mission-critical services that are vital for public safety, enabling the first responders and government agencies on the first line of emergency defense to operate at the speed of the mission.
