Manufacturers and vendors of NFV solutions are striving to provide telco-grade availability from an IT-grade cloud, and that is no easy matter. Over many generations the traditional suppliers of telco infrastructure have honed and refined their products to be ultra-reliable and robust. But now the model is changing and, as IT vendors start to make inroads into the territory once held held by the likes of Ericsson and Nortel, there are real concerns that the rather less mission-critical services and applications that have long characterised the IT sector will not be up to the task of guaranteeing the service and security levels that are vital to telecoms networks.
