Nokia and EneCom to deploy field-proven G.fast technology in combination with Japan's unique VDSL to increase broadband speeds

Via Nokia

Nov 27, 2017

  • Nokia's G.fast technology will enable cable operators to prepare networks for increased high-speed broadband use during 2020 global sporting event

  • With Nokia's proven expertise, EneCom can provide ultra-high broadband speed of up to 1Gbps; deal paves way for future deployment of XG-FAST, which delivers speeds of up to 10Gbps

  • Nokia is the only vendor offering Japanese service providers smooth migration from Japan-specific VDSL to G.fast

November 27, 2017

Tokyo, Japan - Nokia and Energia Communications (EneCom) have agreed to deploy Nokia's G.fast technology in combination with Japan's unique VDSL* for the first time in the country following successful interoperability tests. This technology will enable the cable operator to prepare its networks for increased broadband demand during the country's 2020 global sporting event. Once deployed, G.fast will allow the operator to launch high-bandwidth consuming applications, such as 8K television service, and it will pave the way for the future deployment of XG-FAST, which can provide speeds of up to 10Gbps.

Given that most of Japan's current VDSL will be discontinued, the country's operators who provide VDSL must be prepared to continue providing broadband services for Multi-Dwelling Units (MDUs). Nokia is the only vendor providing interoperability between G.fast equipment and the Japan-specific VDSL technology. The successful joint interoperability test in EneCom's network last month means Nokia's solution can ensure a smooth and economical migration of service providers' networks to the ultra-high-speed broadband provided by G.fast.

With Nokia's solution, cable operators will be able to continue to use VDSL Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) and gradually replace it with G.fast CPEs as and when the demand increases for higher speed broadband service.

Sang Xulei, Heaf of Fixed Networks, Asia Pacific and Japan Region, said:

"We have a longstanding partnership with EneCom, and are confident that G.fast will enable them to delight their subscribers by providing superior broadband experience. G.fast is emerging as a technology of choice to deliver fiber-like speeds to customers over short distances. It will also allow operators to control expenditures since G.fast uses existing copper infrastructure. The deployment will ensure that EneCom gets the crucial first-mover advantage, meaning they can attract new customers by cost-effectively providing high-speed broadband of 1Gbps, which is higher than the average speed currently being provided."

Overview of products to be deployed:

  • Nokia G.fast uses the final few hundred meters of copper infrastructure extending into premises to achieve speeds of up to 1Gbps

  • VDSL is Very-high-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line technology, which uses copper phone lines to provide a faster internet than the traditional Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology.
