NEC enhances multi-data-center function of the NEC Cloud System

Tokyo, June 2, 2016 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) today announced the launch of an enhanced NEC Cloud System (Open Source Software (OSS) building model), featuring multi-data-center functions and supporting the building and operation of OpenStack enabled cloud platforms.

The NEC Cloud System allows for unified operation of data centers with an integrated portal, even in a multi-data-center environment where different versions of OpenStack exist. In addition, multiple data centers can be integrated and managed as one virtual data center by extending Software Defined-Networking (SDN), which has been applied to the network within one data center, to the network between the data centers. As a result, the system can be switched over swiftly by using the data-center resources on the backup side, thereby improving business continuity.

Moreover, NEC provides a management function for data center service providers that allows for the automatic building of physical and virtual network appliances for a multivendor environment. This results in the efficient management of the entire data center.

In recent years, there has been a growing need for OpenStack to provide for the efficient operation of cloud platforms, the swift building of cloud environments and applications, and to secure the openness of cloud platforms. Likewise, in terms of reducing costs for network building and operation and the flexible allocation of resources, expectations have grown for the utilization of Virtual Network Functions (VNF) to virtualize network functionality and Physical Network Functions (PNF).

In addition, regarding business continuity and disaster countermeasures, there is a growing trend among telecommunications carriers, service providers, and corporations to spread the location of their data centers apart to avoid concentrating all of their resources in one place. However, the difference in the OpenStack versions at each data center poses a major challenge in operation due to their dispersed locations, which in turn makes overall management complex. This functional enhancement solves the challenge in multiple data center environment and also responds to VNF/PNF needs.

"NEC contributes to the development of cloud platforms with a high degree of openness by actively utilizing open source software centering on Red Hat OpenStack Platform, and by giving back newly developed functions to the OSS community," said Toshifumi Uesaka, Principal Strategist of Platform Service Division, NEC Corporation.

The NEC Cloud System (OSS building model) utilizes OpenStack and other products provided by partners such as Red Hat, A10, F5 Networks, Fortinet and PaloAlto.

"Red Hat welcomes the latest release of the NEC Cloud System (OSS building model), which uses Red Hat OpenStack Platform as a core part of its cloud infrastructure. We have offered highly reliable open source information and communications technology infrastructure solutions to a wide range of customers through our longtime collaboration with NEC. With this release, we plan to continue working with NEC to extend OpenStack in support of multi data center environments or delivering new features for large-scale service providers," said Jim Totton, Vice President & General Manager, Platforms Business Unit, Red Hat.

"A10 welcomes NEC's enhancement of the features of its NEC Cloud System (OSS building model) and its support for A10's Thunder ADC next-generation application delivery controller, which will enable NEC's customers to use A10's high-performance application delivery and security functions in an environment that suits their needs. A10 will continue to enhance its support for software-defined networking and cloud environments based on its original operating system," said Toru Kawaguchi, President & Country Manager of A10 Networks Japan, Vice President of A10 Networks Inc.

"F5 Networks welcomes the launch of the 'NEC Cloud System (OSS building model).' Working with NEC, we have together provided highly reliable solutions to a variety of mission critical systems. And now, by offering F5 BIG-IP series to our customers as the load balancer / application delivery controller capable of working in concert with the NEC Cloud System, we are able to further accelerate the application speed in cloud environments. Furthermore, we can offer a high level of security and accessibility, thereby enhancing the efficiency and competitiveness of our customers' businesses," said Masakiyo Furudate, Vice President of Japan Sales, F5 Networks Japan GK.

"We are proud that FortiGate is selected as the firewall network function to enhance the NEC Cloud System (OSS building model). Fortinet has been driving data centers to use cloud based solutions by developing virtual appliances and supporting OpenStack. We will continue to work closely with NEC to support NEC's Could System business," said Norio Kubota, Country Manager & VP Sales for Japan, Fortinet Japan K.K.

"OpenStack cloud environments are an attractive choice for many organizations because it gives them the flexibility to accelerate innovation and deploy emerging technologies. We are excited to team up with NEC to provide the next-generation security as virtual network function (VNF) is needed to operationalize OpenStack and effectively prevent cyber breaches. The Palo Alto Networks VM-Series offers the same set of security features as our physical form factor firewalls, and is managed using the same management platform, ensuring a consistent set of policies is maintained across the organization's private, public and hybrid cloud environments," said Hiroshi Alley, Chairman and President, Palo Alto Networks K.K.
