Company offers standards-based cloud solution to fuel development of Smart Cities segments globally

Company Release - 6/26/2017 4:00 AM ET

WILMINGTON, Del., June 26, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC), a mobile technology research and development company, today announced that the company will offer a cloud-based, transformative, intelligent transportation solution hosted on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. The intelligent transportation solution is powered by InterDigital’s horizontal standards-based IoT platform and integration framework.

InterDigital’s intelligent transportation solution hosted on Azure will enable governments and enterprises globally to consolidate varied and disparate data feeds, while also enabling a marketplace for third parties to both access and contribute their data. This encompasses both raw data and high-value analytics derived from it. Data sources include traffic sensors capturing speeds and travel times, roadwork activites, parking occupancy, congestion, bus and rail data, and others. This information is useful to the solution providers serving smart city citizens, governments in their infrastructure planning, and enterprises offering insurance and supply chain services.

The shared nature and interoperability benefits of an open horizontal platform and data materialize in example transport applications that can include multi-modal travel, predictive travel analytics, event management, traffic congestion mitigation, and incident management. As an example, the solution hosted on Azure is being used for the oneTRANSPORT initiative, a public-private effort to pilot a transport data marketplace and a range of transport-related IoT applications in the UK.

“IoT operates in a highly-fragmented environment preventing the unification of varied, disparate and legacy data sources. Therefore, emerging solutions require future-proofing and guaranteed interoperability,” said Jim Nolan, EVP, IoT Solutions, InterDigital. “We’re thrilled to offer our intelligent transportation solution on Microsoft Azure, which facilitates true deployment flexibility and global scalability.”

Michael Donlan, Vice President, U.S. State and Local Government, Microsoft Corp. said,

“We’re pleased to see InterDigital benefit from the scale and flexibility of Microsoft Azure that supports developing solutions that help government and enterprise better manage and mitigate urban traffic congestion challenges.”

InterDigital’s intelligent transportation solution is just one example of multiple industry solutions that can be enabled through InterDigital’s standards-based IoT platform and integration framework hosted on Azure.
