Paris, France, November 04, 2015

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) is collaborating with OPT New Caledonia to extend a national DWDM transport network supporting growing mobile and fixed broadband demand.

The network, based on Alcatel-Lucent’s leading integrated packet transport solution, will be deployed across all inhabited territories of New Caledonia over the next three years. Alcatel-Lucent has also announced plans to open a Noumea office, providing dedicated support to OPT New Caledonia and its efforts to build New Caledonia’s national communications capability.

OPT New Caledonia has established a 2017 Strategic Plan to guide its contribution to addressing New Caledonia’s development issues. This includes strengthening its local optical backbone, expanding its high-speed mobile network and switching 65,000 customers to fiber in eight years. 73,000 customers are currently connected via ADSL.

Key Facts :

  • Under a three-year arrangement, Alcatel-Lucent will provide OPT New Caledonia with a full-turnkey professional services deployment, including migration of existing transport platforms to the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) WDM platform, with its Service Router Operating System- (SROS) compatible integrated packet transport technology, allowing the efficient transfer of packet traffic over the optical network.
  • Alcatel-Lucent has an active presence across the Pacific Islands, including business in French Polynesia, Fiji, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.

Quotes :

OPT New Caledonia Deputy CEO, Auxence Fafin, said: “This network will meet growing demand for mobile and fixed Internet, data and voice services across Greater Noumea, providing high levels of availability and throughput of up to 10Gbps to meet our future digital strategy directions.”

Alcatel-Lucent Oceania President and Managing Director, Sean O’Halloran, said: “Broadband growth demand is a significant factor for operators across the Pacific and we are very pleased to be building our presence to support this growth in New Caledonia. This optical network will provide OPT New Caledonia with substantial new flexibility, reliability and scalability to meet demand across its national footprint.”
