Alcatel-Lucent provides TIM with record distance microwave link to support ultra-broadband connectivity on Sicilian islands

Via Alcatel Lucent Newsroom

Sep 22, 2015

Vimercate, Italy, September 22, 2015

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has provided TIM with a microwave link that will ensure continuous ultra-broadband connectivity between the Sicilian islands of Pantelleria and Lampedusa.

With many natural and historical landmarks, Pantelleria and Lampedusa are popular tourist destinations. The microwave link, which has been deployed using Alcatel-Lucent’s 9500 Microwave Packet Radio platform, will strengthen the reliability of telephony and ultra-broadband access for both residents and visitors to the islands.

Key Facts :

  • Alcatel-Lucent has deployed a 147km-long high capacity (800Mbit/s), high-availability radio link – supporting a mix of IP and legacy traffic - from Lampedusa to Pantelleria using its 9500 Microwave Packet Radio.
  • Alcatel-Lucent’s market leading microwave backhaul and transport technology helps providers to deliver ultra broadband services everywhere, providing a viable alternative to connect underserved areas where a fiber network is unavailable, and/or to protect existing fiber links.

TIM is committed to serving customers with the highest quality ultra-broadband connections, and providing the best in class connectivity services in Italy, ranging from the single household to the most demanding public service applications. For this reason TIM is working with Alcatel-Lucent to leverage its leadership in backhaul technology and ensure continuous connectivity for the residents, organizations and many visitors to Lampedusa and Pantelleria.

Quote:

Benedetto Di Salvo, Telecom Italia Key Account Director at Alcatel-Lucent, said: “Microwave technology can be deployed to overcome the connectivity challenges in the most complex environments. With a mix of access, backhaul and transport technology we can ensure high-quality ultra-broadband connectivity for all.”
